CONSENSUS STATEMENT -Four-point Scoring Rubric: I feel that this rubric is right in the middle of the other two containing the perfect balance of categories. The categories can be at 4 levels, experimenting, developing, effective, and strong; they do not seem to overlap.
Five-point Scoring Rubric: I feel that rubric is also very effective containing the five different levels of experimenting, emerging, developing, effective, and strong. Similar to the 4-point rubric, they are still separate and do not overlap; however, I feel that emerging and developing are the same.
Six-point Scoring Rubric: This rubric is too much! It is hard to grade with and I can imagine the students feeling overwhelmed if I presented this to them. This rubric includes experimenting, emerging, developing, effective, strong, and exceptional. The levels will overlap.
Preference: I would prefer to use the 4-point scale. The 4 points, 1: Experimenting, 2: Developing, 3: Effective, and 4: Strong, break down the categories in enough levels and it is easy to follow and use for grading. My students will not feel as overwhelmed.
trengths and Weaknesses: I feel the 6+1 is a great scoring tool in evaluating students work. Some strengths include that the rubrics break down each piece of writing in categories: ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, conventions, and presentation. There is an explanation for what is expected making it easier to complete. The categories are then divided into levels, which break down a piece of work even further. Each category is a very important part of the writing process and this system reinforces that fact revealing that it is not just about the information in a given paper, but also the presentation, the choices of words, and how it is organized are equally important. A weakness in the rubrics, I feel, are that they contain several levels to score from.
Expectation of Presentation in future classroom: I definitely think expressing the importance of presentation is going to be a main part of my classroom. I feel, that the information on the paper is far more important than how it looks, but if it is unreadable or hard on the eye, the reader will not get the full affect. The presentation of the paper will distract him or her. I will make sure, however, that before I start grading a student on presentation I will explain each component and expectations. I believe presentation is going to be a main part of my classroom as well. The importance of presentation should be presented and explained to students in a thorough manner! Information in a paper is more important than how the paper looks to the reader. The paper MUST be readable, without distractions. I, too, will make sure that I will explain the importance of presentation and what it entails, as well as the expectations of the paper. Paper #1: I would give this paper a 1 also. The blank spots are distracting and due to the extreme amount of scratch outs, it makes the paper hard to read.
Paper #2: I can’t even read this paper. The students writing is not effective; it is unreadable. It causes the readers to concentrate really hard on figuring out what the author put down, let alone the point the student author is trying to get across.
Paper#3: I feel like the score of a 4 is appropriate. It much easier to read—the margins, spacing, and includes a good performance—they are well done.
Paper#4: I agree with the score of a 3. The spacing between the paragraphs is extremely distracting, but the font is clear and readable. I do not mind so much on the size of the title, it captures the readers attention.
Paper#5: The paper deserves a high 4. The font is readable and the spacing is well done; however the title is a little large for the page and the margins on the top/bottom are uneven.
Paper #6: This paper definitely deserves a 5. I would show this to my students as an example of what their paper should turn out like. It is pleasing to the eye is readable; the margins, font, spacing, and size are well done!
